David Brake - worked at local energy company DEL - KIJAICO
Information Access provides students with disabilities "real world" summer work experiences in the Delaware community. By participating in an internship, students gain knowledge and experience first hand. Positions offer a variety of interesting projects which allow students to become more familiar with careers in the science, engineering, and math disciplines. They also receive a stipend for their work.
Information Access sponsors a number of student positions to eligible candidates; students with a disability in high school living in the Delaware Valley region. Applications may be submitted via email (ia-info@ee.udel.edu), fax (302-831-4316), or snail mail (Information Access Lab, Univ. of Delaware / Department of EE and CIS, 208 Evans Hall, Newark DE 19716). Information Access sponsored David Brake (featured above) in a summer work experience. David had the opportunity to learn more about energy having interned with the local company DEL-KIJAICO. We hosted two students Erin Cramer and Jeremy Good . These students learned about Assistive Technologies, computers, engineering principles, programming and the Internet. Links to their work are listed below.
Assistive Technologies: Comparison of Speech
Recognition Software, Erin Cramer.
Erin learned a great deal about computers and Assistive Technologies. In her time with
us she worked on a variety of things. She learned how to use a windows and unix operating system.
She learned how to use the Internet and do some basic html programming. Erin contributed to
our discussions on our science place online, Scientopia. She also got to work with a few
students with disabilities in evaluating speech recognition software.
Internet Site Development: Engineering Curriculum,
Jeremy Good.
Jeremy learned how to use a unix operating system and learned how to program in html.
He was exposed to an electrical engineering curriculum and created the web pages for
an undergraduate electrical engineering course.
At the end of the 8 week internship period all students participating in the program have the opportunity
to share their work with peers and the community. In the form of a poster session students display
and talk about their work.
