The following is a list of educational resources and efforts aimed at improving the learning environment of students with disabilities.
Secondary Science Education Center (SSEC)
The SSEC is an environment at the University of Delaware where pre-service
teachers can practice their skills before teaching in the public schools.
The facilities consist of a laboratory and Resource Center. Information
Access is working with the SSEC in order to address disability issues. Efforts
include: incorporating innovative curriculum components
into teaching plans and providing workshops based on specific disability
issues.
Mathematics and Science Education Resource Center (MSERC)
Information Access' collaboration with the MSERC assists in providing
an ongoing teacher in-service program. Specific workshops are incorporated
into the program. Disability issues are being addressed and integrated
into the regular in-service curriculum training. The MSERC is dedicated
to: (1) helping Delaware k-12 math and science teachers (2) serving as an
information center for mathematics and science education (3) offering professional
development programs for k-12 (4) collaborating with the local school
districts, the Department of Public Instruction, and other agencies dedicated
to enhancing science education in Delaware.
Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) Education Programs
In collaboration with other offices of the University, the medical community,
and significant private and corporate contributors, Information Access, provides
educational workshops that focus on ADD. The comprehensive program
seeks to expand accommodation services to students, offer new medical and counseling
services, and provide more information to the University community on the learning styles
of ADD students.
Future efforts will include educational activities for pre-service
teacher education and continuing education and outreach to families.
